Synopsis
She is the very thing he’s spent his whole life hunting.
He is the very thing she’s spent her whole life pretending to be.
Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites.
The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished in order to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.
Surviving in the slums as an Ordinary is no simple task, and Paedyn knows this better than most. Having been trained by her father to be overly observant since she was a child, Paedyn poses as a Psychic in the crowded city, blending in with the Elites as best she can in order to stay alive and out of trouble. Easier said than done.
When Paeydn unsuspectingly saves one of Ilyas princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials. The brutal competition exists to showcase the Elites’ powers—the very thing Paedyn lacks. If the Trials and the opponents within them don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what she is—completely Ordinary.
Review
It still took me a month BUT the more I got into it, the more I couldn't put it down and for that I am extremely thankful.
Elites have all the power, gifted with them after the plague
Mundanes have either half the power, or are defensive
Ordinaries are simply that. Ordinary humans.
Living in the slums, hiding her ordinary existence is Paeydn. Thieving her way through life to survive. That is until she not only thieves but saves the life of the enforcer of the king and the 2nd son of the king. Yes a Prince.
That ears her the title of Silver saviour thanks to her long silver hair. There is an instant spark, granted but after they part ways, for a short moment of time they return to their elite and ordinary lives. That is until Paeydn is thrown into the purging trials. This one different because it was created to be special. As the enforcer himself, Kai is to take part.
But the third trial is different. Unlike the other 2 trials, its in the bowl. And the winner, after making it through the maze, must kill the criminal. But that criminal is Adena, Pae's best friend. And that is the moment where all hell breaks loose in the book. Yes, the ending chapters! Sleep is for the weak in my eyes through these books which as I go through these reviews you will see because lord! I was failing at sleep and survived on coffee!
A friend of mine also struggled with this book and is considering picking it back up. I hope she gets hooked like I did. FYI I have grumbled to my manager about not letting me finish the chapter at the end of break. That's all i am saying!
